My History
After going to San Francisco in the fall of 1968, I attended the University of San Francisco (USF) graduating in 1972. I majored in History with a minor in Theater Arts. I met and married Marie Pastrick. We divorced in 1975. I sold life insurance for a couple of years and then in 1979 started working for the USF Public Safety Department as a Public Safety Officer. I married my wife, Eileen in 1981. We have 3 children; Kate 36 who teaches 2nd grade, Megan 33 an architect and roller derby all-star, and Zachary 25 who is pursuing comedy and voice acting. I was appointed the Public Safety Director in 1984. In 1989 I was hired by the State of California Office of Emergency Services as an Emergency Management Instructor/Coordinator. I worked for California OES until retiring in July 2015. I also served as the Administration Chief for 5 years as well as 21 years as an instructor. I specialized in managing the Introduction to Emergency Management: Earthquake program and trained over 10,000 people in how local jurisdictions manage their responses to major disasters. I also served three terms on the City of Arroyo Grande City Council for 12 years, and spent 4 years on the Arroyo Grande Planning Commission, 12 years on the San Luis Obispo Air Pollution Control District, and 6 years on the Five Cities Fire Authority Board of Directors.
